Frog

Appearance

FrogFrogs are tail-less amphibians with smooth skin. They range in colour from brown to olive green and have a dark patch behind the eye.

Frogs are easy to identify by their loud ‘croak’!

Habitat

Frogs are found in gardens, open fields and in woods. They come to ponds, streams and pools in the spring to find a mate and to lay their spawn.  The frog spawn grows into tadpoles that live in the freshwater habitats until they turn into adult frogs.

Adaptations

Frogs can use their skin to 'breathe' when oxygen demand is low, like when they hibernate through the winter months in the debris at the bottom of a pond. They choose their hibernation site carefully and pick areas where it is unlikely to freeze such as under logs and other plant material.

Food Source

Carnivores: Frogs prey on invertebrates like slugs, snails, worms and insects, trapping them with their long, sticky tongues.

Conservation

Frogs can be more common in gardens than in some areas of countryside!  To attract frogs to your garden, provide plenty of cover for them. This means not being too tidy!! Try to leave a few piles of leaves for them to shelter in.
